In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Address Youth Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Terms of the Fresh Electoral Partnership
According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's established political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.
Broader Government Consultations Underway
In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of major political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the uprising.
Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
