Right-leaning reactions to the partial disclosure of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the previous administration pointing out the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in images, while others lamented how extensive redactions portray Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable manner.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Fervent Rhetoric
Justice Department representatives justified the heavily censored sections with fervent exaggerated language. “Never in American the nation's history has a President or the Department of Justice been so open with the American people about such a sensitive legal matter,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo outlining the censorship process.
Concerns Prompted by Redactions
While Trump's identity and likeness appear in portions of the materials, the widespread redactions raise serious concerns about what may be concealed beneath them. A number of Republicans immediately demanded increased transparency.
“People are furious and disengaging,” wrote Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the law, and suggested that a subsequent Congress may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, today’s file dump grossly does not comply with both the spirit and the letter of the act,” he continued.
A Faction of Rightwing Figures Swing In Support of the Release
But, some conservative commentators and Trump loyalists came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—originating from a DOJ run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are completely censored, and many of the men shown in photographs have their faces blacked out.
Yet a few are not, including high-profile individuals like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, allowed some rightwing figures to launch the offensive.
“This is quite ironic how the Democrats falsely accused Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil documents that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” stated conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a woman that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one explanation Epstein would photograph a US President with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Clinton Campaign Releases Statement
Clinton has consistently said he knew of no illegal actions by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The administration hasn’t been concealing these documents for an extended period only to dump them late on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“This is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from information they’ll try and hide permanently. Therefore they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they desire, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the response added.
Overall Rightwing Comment Remains Subdued
However, overall comment on the right was relatively muted after the release, particularly when juxtaposed against the loud demands for transparency that preceded the legislative vote to pass a bill mandating the documents' publication.
The commentator, who recently accepted media access at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest advocates for a full disclosure. In February, she criticized the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a group of conservative influencers were given physical folders of files that included no new data.
